Prosthetics & Orthotics
Orthotics is the medical field concerned with the application and manufacture of devices which support or correct the function of a limb or the torso. Individuals who benefit from an orthosis have sustained a physical impairment such as a stroke, spinal cord injury, or a congenital abnormality such as spina bifida or cerebral palsy. Orthotics can also include shoe inserts like a brace or a cast that molds around your foot.
Prosthetics are any artificial extension that replaces a missing body part. It is part of the field of biomechatronics, the science of using mechanical devices with human muscle, skeleton, and nervous systems to assist or enhance motor
control lost by trauma, disease, or defect. Prostheses are typically used to replace parts lost by injury (traumatic) or missing from birth (congenital) or to supplement defective body parts. Inside the body, artificial heart valves are in common use with artificial hearts and lungs seeing less common use but under active technology development.
Because most of the products in this industry are custom made for an individual patient, Liquid Molding is the ideal manufacturing method. Thermoset polyurethanes allow for flexibility in-part design as well as the ability to manufacture in-house. This significantly cuts down lead time on a brace or prosthetic. Here are some materials that are currently used in this Industry:
Part Materials
Ultralloy™ - General purpose rigid casting compounds. All speeds.
Hapflex™ – 25A-72D hybrid elastomeric polyurethanes.
Tuffalloy™ – Liquid Molding Compounds with thermoplastic properties.
Steralloy™ – Food & Drug Grade Liquid Molding Compounds.
Castalloy™ – Low viscosity, high speed casting resin.
S-RIM™ – Low viscosity, 1:1 casting resins that gel in under a minute and de-mold in less than 10.
Mold Materials
Hapflex™ 500 Series - Flexible polyurethanes that will long outlast silicone.
Hapflex™ 600 Series - Rigid elastomers that wear like iron.
Hapcast™ - Aluminum, steel, and iron filled epoxies used for cast composite and production tooling.
Haprez™ 3744/63 - Glass filled epoxy laminating system for structural backups.
Fill-Its/Haprez™ Combo – Lightweight, low cost filler materials that will decrease shrinkage and mold cost.
Equipment
RAPIDFIL™ - LCD / computer controlled, 2 component, dispensing equipment.
MINIFIL™ - Low cost, 2 component, portable, dispensing equipment.
RAPIDSHOT™ – Handheld cartridge dispensing system for 1:1, 2:1, and 4:1 ratios.
X-11 Molding Chamber – Ergonomically designed pressure and curing chamber for parts and molds.
